Sharing Web Resources

As I followed outside links from my organization, http://www.nieer.org/, I came across an article in the Wall Street Journal, October 14, 2011.  It was an article about the money that New York states' Department of Education will be required to return 30 million to the state that could have serviced 8,000 additional children.  The Department of Education says districts have a difficult time spending the money because of the state's strict guidelines such as only half-day programs, while most families require full day care.

A second lead was an interesting article in the York Dispatch from York, PA.  It is an article addressed to buisness people in the the comunity from members of the Chamber of Commerce.  The governor of Pennsylvania is currently introducing education reform legislation and Chamber of Commerce members support him, especially in the area of Early Child Education.  "The Chamber needs motivated, intelligent workers and therefore the whole community must care for and educate children before they enter kindergarten" (Donley, 2011).  As school budgets are being squeezed business owners and other professionals need to step up and be proactive in supporting early childhood education.

Searching through NIEER's website I found a lot of information on assessments.  Over 35 policy briefs and other research articles help educators make wise decisions about chosing and implementing assessments.  There is also current information regarding access, economics and finance, english language learners, outcomes, quality and curriculum.

A recent article in my enewsletter from http://www.preknow.org/ discussed a situation in North Carolina and funding cut-backs in early childhood education.  In North Carolina a child advocacy group is considering a possible lawsuit against state lawmakers who recently cut funding for pre-k programming.  The lawsuit is an effort to get 2400 at-risk 4 year olds back in the classroom.  Budget cuts have prevented the programs from being able to enroll these children.  This lawsuit is in its initial stages and is currently unofficial.  However, many different officials, including a professor at the Charlotte School of law, say its necessary if state lawmakers don't re-establish funding on it's own.

The more I explore this organization the more impressed I become.  It is a wealth of information and when I need research for my papers I will frequently find valuable resources.  It is thouourgh and covers many different topic areas.  It is very well-organized and I find it a great addition to my tool box.  I think anyone in Early Childhood should explore this organization and use it to enhance their teaching and professional development.

Although I understand the frustrations, I am struggling with a lawsuit over budget cuts. Many agencies and programs that receive state and federal funds experienced cuts. I would be interested to read the whole story to understand the specifics and the reasoning for such as lawsuit. I am sure they must have some foundation for the action.

Thank you for sharing all of the resources and links.

  2. Tracy -

I sounds as if you have just scratched the surface of all that NIEER has to offer. Thank you for sharing such interesting stories. I am especially interested in the support the Pennsylvania Governor seems to have for his early childhood initiatives!

"My Connections to Play"

Two quotes:

Vygotsky - "Children use private speech in play to regulate behavior"

"Creative play is a central activity in the lives of healthy children."
Almon, K. (2002) The vital role of play in early childhood
education. Gateways, 43.

My family, especially my mom, was very supportive of play. She recognized its importance. My sister and I loved to play with our friends. She would take us to the community pool and parks and we would play all day. When we got a little older we got a trampoline and jumped on it for much of the day. We had a playroom above our garage in Tennessee and we played there for many hours even though it got very hot at times. My sister and I loved to play with dolls. My mom always said she would be my best friend and as we got older did not encourage many outside friendships. I think that hurt our social skills a little. Now we talk every once in a while, have very different lives and see each other about 2-3 times per year. Even though we are still very close and had many years of play as children, we have drifted apart. My dad was really good at playing with us also. He took us on our boat all the time and encouraged more of the rough and tumble type of play. Both my mom and taught us to be resourceful and take care of ourselves, almost to a fault.

As I attempt to write my blog assignement I feel play has changed a great deal since when we were younger. We would go all day without seeing the inside of our house and find things to play with. All three of my boys are sitting around my table asking me questions and saying they are bored. I live about 2 blocks from one of the most beautiful lakes and beaches in the country and 1 block from an elementary school playground. There are children all over this neighborhood to play with and they are asking me what they can do. Where have I gone wrong in this scenario? They have come to rely on me as their "social director" and I have probably enabled that. Play is very different. I am going to cancel cable and hide the playstation and nintendo ds's for the summer. My kids are older and possibly beyond help. I hope that young children will be pulled away from the computers, tv and other electronic devices. I hope they will be in a safe place to be able to venture out and make friends. Parents need to be more confident in their childrens ability and need to become independent players. I think sometimes parents protect their children and don't let them make mistakes at an early age.

I have included pictures of my boys below at the beach. This is what we love to do these days. This was on a spring break vacation. My youngest sons favorite toy was a palm branch he found the first day. Again, an item from nature that I didn't have to purchase that entertained him. Nice!!
